Medical Care and Housing Fact Sheet

Many people are shocked to learn that one of the largest groups of people who rely on the Dorothy Day Center – over 25 percent – is elderly and disabled men and women with extremely complex medical conditions. Each night, dozens of people with wheelchairs, walkers and oxygen tanks line up as early as possible in the hopes of securing one of the few mats on the floor close to an electrical outlet so they can plug in their medical equipment. It is not uncommon for people experiencing homelessness to be dropped off at the front door of the Dorothy Day Center directly following major medical treatments and hospital stays.
